Brighton Meisner Working with Outside Edge Theatre - March 2017

Martin Hobbs is now teaching the Meisner Technique to actors at Outside Edge Theatre in London.  They are a company that works with recovering addicts, often touring their devised plays around rehab centres and support groups. All the actors are recovering addicts, and most have learned to act through the companies ongoing workshops.

Outside Edge is the only theatre company working nationally and internationally producing work focused on substance-misuse. The company was set up in 1998 by Phil Fox, an actor and himself a former addict.

"Teaching these actors the technique is a great joy for me, they are honest and hardworking with a dedication to open up and become more connected. A lot of addicts have had a long, hard, honest look at themselves and so they aren't afraid of going deep.

And it can be important work for their development as actors.

Being out of control can be dangerous in the early days of recovery, but to be fully present as actors they need to know how to let go within the preset boundaries. Seeing them relax and enjoy the process is the greatest delight for me." Martin Hobbs, Brighton Meisner Founder
